A mountaintop stone temple carved into Korea's sacred peaks, where eighth-century Buddhist artistry overlooks the endless East Sea.

Seokguram is a hermitage built into the slopes of Tohamsan mountain, standing 750 meters above sea level in South Korea's Gyeongju region. Though separated by three kilometers from its sister temple Bulguksa, both share the mountain's quiet heights and breathtaking views toward the East Sea. Together they form a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized globally for their spiritual and architectural significance.

Within the grotto's stone chambers rests some of the world's finest Buddhist sculpture. The hermitage exemplifies eighth-century Korean craftsmanship at its pinnacle—a marriage of architecture and sacred art carved directly from the mountain itself. Since its designation as a National Treasure in 1962, Seokguram has remained a beacon of Buddhist heritage, drawing pilgrims seeking both contemplation and artistic wonder.

Fun fact

The grotto was constructed during the Unified Silla period and deliberately engineered so that sunrise light illuminates the central Buddha statue through the entrance chamber.
